Easter weekend was here...time to get our camp on! While researching places to camp a few weekends ago I had stumbled upon the South Carolina State Park site that advertises specific months that certain State Parks are cheaper to camp at. "Camping Specials" if you will. It just so happened that Easter weekend it was Hickory Knob State Park and Resort that was the lucky winner. For one heck of a deal I booked us 3 days, 2 nights worth of what we thought would be woodsy, peaceful camping. However, what we got was one chaotic, packed, wet and just overall bummer of a weekend. First batter up was the storm. We had planned to leave the Friday after work to get to the park and set up camp. It wasn't too far from our house only about an hour and half. Well mother nature had other plans for us. She decided she was going to throw us a curve ball with downpours and tornadoes. There are very few things I won't attempt... camping in a trailer during a tornado is one of them. With the weather being a strike out, we decided to pack the trailer and leave early Saturday morning. We woke early only to find the weather still fairly iffy but rather than lose the money we headed down south to the park. It was when we arrived we realized the actual size of our mistake. PEOPLE. EVERYWHERE. And not just any people, screaming kids egg-cited that the Easter Bunny was at the State Park. We drove through the chaos and parked the truck on the side of the road. It gave Luna a good chance to wake up from the ride and get her bark on at the kiddos. We went inside to the resort office where we found a gift shop, food court and a lot more people. We checked in and made our way to the campground area of the State Park (of course just a quick peak in the gift shop for me! I found anchor shower shoes and beer socks for Cameron.) We arrived at the site only to find we were facing just a large wet forest of trees, while the waterfront sites were all around us and open because most people must have canceled their plans. We sat for a little bit trying to regain our energy. We decided a hike might help make the mood lighter! We headed up the road only to find the hiking trail was not labeled so we walked quite a ways before finding the entrance to the trail. We muddled our way down the trail as it started to rain but that was not going to defeat us! We ended up in the middle of the trail by a lake only to realize FINALLY there were colored signs that told you where to go for the trails. We found the one that leads you to the campground and headed back. It was at the end of the hike we discovered that the trail head began down the road from our campsite and we had actually turned the wrong way out of our campsite. Admitting defeat and ready for beer, we stopped and took pictures at the gorgeous lake, which was vignetted by storm clouds, before heading back to the trailer to sit and drink our well earned beer. The rest of the night consisted of sitting and enjoying some music before calling it a night.
